Why this masterclass now?

Congregations are changing. Attendance patterns, giving behaviour, communication habits and the expectations placed on church leaders look different today than they did a decade ago — and they will keep moving.

The Church of 2030 is a focused, practical masterclass that helps leaders think strategically rather than reactively. It does not predict the future. It examines observable ministry, social, economic and technological changes, and asks what a healthy, well-governed and financially sustainable church will need to understand before 2030.

The session is Christian, professional and ecumenically respectful. It is designed for leaders from Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Pentecostal, Charismatic, independent and other Christian traditions, and concentrates on shared leadership practice rather than denominational distinctives.

Ministry now asks more than preaching alone

Leaders are expected to handle people, governance, finance, communication and technology alongside teaching and pastoral care — usually without formal training in any of them.

Younger generations engage differently

Reaching and retaining emerging generations increasingly depends on how a ministry communicates, disciples and creates belonging, not only on what it preaches.

Technology has entered the ministry conversation

Digital platforms, records systems and AI tools are already present in church work. The question is no longer whether to engage them, but how to do so responsibly.

Institutions outlive founders — or they don't

Succession, accountability and administrative discipline decide whether a ministry endures. These are decisions taken years before they are needed.

This is preparation, not alarm. PLC does not claim to predict the future; the session works from observable ministry, social and technological change.

What participants will learn

By the end of the masterclass, participants should better understand:

Session outline

  1. Reading the Landscape

What is actually changing in church attendance, giving, membership and community engagement — and how to read it honestly rather than anxiously.

  2. Leadership Beyond the Founder

Succession, delegation, leadership pipelines and the structures that let a ministry continue without its original leader.

  3. Administration as Stewardship

Records, governance, meetings and reporting — the unglamorous systems that make growth sustainable.

  4. Financial Sustainability & Public Trust

Budgeting, internal controls, transparency and the accountability practices that protect a ministry's credibility.

  5. Technology, AI & Digital Ministry

Practical and ethical use of digital tools, data protection basics, and where AI can and should not be used in ministry.

  6. The Next Generation

Communication, discipleship and belonging for younger members, and what retention actually requires.

  7. Building Your 2030 Roadmap

A guided exercise turning the session into concrete first steps for your own ministry context.
